The climate change group has recently been undertaking regular walks along Kempston’s waterways, to check for blockages and report any flytipping or vandalism. This process is carried out once every two months, alternating with a bi-monthly litter pick.

The previous route followed the brook along Kempston High Street, through The Spinney and out into the new estate beyond Hill Rise. KCCG members noted several litter items and evidence of poor water quality, confirmed by a representative of Bedfordshire Great Ouse Valley Environmental Trust (BedsGOVET).

The regular monitoring walks aim at improving Kempston’s natural and built-up habitats: by reporting the state of the brook to the town council, councillors are able to arrange for waste items to be collected. Such an act improves the flow of water and can help prevent flooding later down the line.

Keeping track of water quality is also important in building up a bigger picture of the local environment. KCCG may in future be able to contribute towards wider campaigns to minimise agricultural pollution and road runoff by providing evidence of environmental damage.
